When artists get organized…
By Dave Oswald Mitchell, Briarpatch Magazine
Never underestimate the power of a bunch of pissed-off artists.
That was Wajdi Mouawad’s key message in his dynamite open letter to Prime Minister Harper. And Canada’s arts community has risen to the challenge in countless ways, large and small.
To add to the growing list to creative responses that could swing this election in a few key ridings, here’s what some folks in Regina, Saskatchewan, calling themselves “Elect Art” have been doing.
The group recently passed out classy-looking flyers — to great response — during the intermission at a recent performance of the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and has been asking individuals and groups hosting arts events over the next few weeks to share a simple message with their patrons:
“Please think about the arts when you vote.”
There’s also a public “arts manifestation” in the works for October 6 that will target Regina’s downtown business district during lunch hour.
Such actions could easily be replicated or adapted elsewhere.
